European Painting before 1900, Johnson Collection Still Life with Fruit, Dead Partridges, and a Parrot 1646 Jan Fyt, Flemish (active Antwerp), 1611 - 1661 Oil on canvas * Gallery 264, European Art 1500-1850, second floor Cat. 705 John G. Johnson Collection, 1917 |
LabelLike his master Frans Snyders (1579-1657), Jan Fyt was an Antwerp still-life painter who worked in a dynamic, painterly manner rather than a precise, smooth style. In his early years Fyt worked in Paris, but also traveled to Italy. He specialized in flower paintings and animal and game still lifes and was tremendously successful. Fyt displays a love of luxury by combining partridges, victims of a hunt, with an exotic parrot perched amid vines and fruit.Social Tags [?]bird [x] dead [x] dead animal [x] flemish [x] oil on canvas [x] parrot [x] partridge [x] still life [x] [Add Your Own Tags]* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons.
